About
Bugis, Kampong Bugis in Malay, is the area around Bugis Street. The original street was known internationally from the 1950s to the 1980s for its nightly gatherings of transgender people, was rebuilt in the mid-1980s and survives as a cobbled lane between the buildings of the Bugis Junction mall. The street market sold today as Bugis Street is New Bugis Street, which used to be Albert Street. Bugis station (East-West and Downtown lines) is 230 m from the centre. The Sultan Mosque is 220 m away, Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple and Sri Krishnan Temple about 550 m, and Albert Centre, a hawker centre, 410 m.
